The benefits of a dome used on a reed is for a better fit along with its self-positioning tendencies.  The real performance comes from a small vortex of air that it forms inside the area between the reed and bottom of the dome.  This vortex of air holds the latex in the special zone once the desired tone has been reached.  When that tone is reached the vortex helps hold the reed position allowing you to hold the note with ease.  This is what makes domed reeds a game changer to many callers.
